The Hunt
Westland National Park is one of the most spectacular and challenging tahr hunting environments in the world. Sheer valleys, alpine tops, and a wilderness that demands respect — this is the backdrop for the NZTF Resident’s Tag 2026.
The winner of this ballot will receive a fully hosted five-day tahr hunt in Westland National Park, at a time of their choosing within 12 months of the draw. This isn’t a commercial hunt package. It’s an experience built by hunters, for hunters — with an NZTF member alongside you the whole way.
What’s included
- Five days hunting in Westland National Park
- Return helicopter flights to and from the hunting location
- Professional guiding throughout the hunt

- A videographer to capture and document the full experience
Scheduling is subject to volunteer availability and reasonable notice. NZTF will work with the winner to find dates that suit, within 12 months of the Matariki Weekend draw.

Why This Matters
Tahr are one of New Zealand’s most iconic alpine species — and one of the most contested. In Westland National Park, tahr populations need active, ongoing management to protect the unique alpine ecosystem they inhabit.
The NZTF believes that hunters are best placed to lead that management. Not as a commercial exercise, but as a community of people who genuinely care about the mountains, the animals, and the future of access to wild country.
Every dollar raised through the Resident’s Tag 2026 ballot goes directly toward funding hunter-led tahr management operations. That means boots on the ground and gathering data that makes the case for a hunting-based management model — for the long term.
When you enter this ballot, you’re not just buying a chance at an extraordinary hunt. You’re backing a programme that keeps hunters at the table.
How to Enter
Entries are open to New Zealand residents only. The ballot is open for one month, closing 8pm Friday 10 July 2026. The winning entry will be drawn midday Sunday 14th July during Matariki Weekend 2026. The draw will be conducted using a random number generator applied to the complete list of valid entries.

This ballot is about giving everyday Kiwi hunters a genuine shot. Ballot is capped at 500 entries on a first-in-first-served basis to comply with statute
The draw
All valid entries are assigned a unique ticket number. The winning ticket is drawn using a random number generator during Matariki Weekend 2026, witnessed and recorded by NZTF. The winner is notified by email and phone.
Eligibility
- Open to New Zealand residents only
- One entry per person
- Duplicate entries will result in disqualification — entry fees are non-refundable
- The prize is non-transferable and must be taken within 12 months of the draw
